Works on paper have a very special visual meaning for me, both as the medium itself and because of its cornerstone importance in the school of visual art I am coming from for my prime medium of oil painting.
Following the visual philosophy of Italian Renaissance Masters the venerable tradition of the Russian Imperial Academy considered the mental visual cognition which is developed through a particular approach to a drawing crucial to the scope of key aspects in painting.
The principles of Russian Academic approach to drawing differ drastically from the French Academic approach which resulted in vastly different relation to painting by the leading masters of both academic schools and therefor in very different aspects of their art.
It is the difference in their respective approach to drawing which resulted in such vast difference between the Russian Academic art of Repin from French Academic art of Bouguereau.
